Importing Files

Import CADit project files, images for tracing, and STL models into your designs.

Importing files

CADit supports importing several file types to help you work with existing content. You can open saved CADit projects, import images for tracing, and bring in STL models as starting points for your designs.

Opening CADit files

CADit project files use the .cadit extension and contain your complete design including shapes, colors, and 3D settings.

To open a CADit file:

  1. Open the main menu (hamburger icon in the top left)
  2. Select Open CADit File
  3. Choose the .cadit file from your computer
  4. The design loads into the editor

The file replaces your current design. Save any work you want to keep before opening a new file.

Importing images

Use the Photo Guide tool to import images for tracing. This is useful for creating designs based on photos, logos, or reference images.

Supported image formats

  • PNG
  • JPG / JPEG
  • GIF
  • SVG (vector graphics)
  • WebP
  • Most common image formats

How to import an image

  1. Select the Photo Guide tool from the 2D toolbar (camera icon)
  2. A file dialog opens automatically
  3. Select an image from your computer
  4. The image appears on the canvas with tracing controls

Working with imported images

Once imported, the image becomes a tracing guide. CADit automatically processes the image and generates editable shapes from it:

  • Trace mode: Converts the image to shapes by detecting edges and outlines. Works with any image type.
  • Sample mode: Available for SVG files only. Extracts the vector paths directly from the SVG for higher precision.

Adjust these settings in the parameter panel:

ParameterDescription
ModeChoose between Trace (for any image) or Sample (SVG only)
Maximum WidthSets the output size in millimeters
Extrusion HeightSets how tall the 3D shape will be
Despeckle SizeRemoves small noise from traced images
ThresholdControls edge detection sensitivity (-1 for automatic)
InvertUse for light-on-dark images

Importing STL files

Import existing 3D models in STL format to use as starting points or reference geometry in your designs.

To import an STL file:

  1. Open the main menu (hamburger icon in the top left)
  2. Select Import STL
  3. Choose the .stl file from your computer
  4. The model's 2D outline appears on the canvas as a shape

CADit projects the STL model onto the canvas and creates a 2D shape from its outline. The original 3D geometry determines the initial height of the shape.

What happens during STL import

  • The 3D model is analyzed and its silhouette is extracted
  • A 2D shape is created on the canvas matching the outline
  • The shape's height is set based on the original model's dimensions
  • You can modify the shape like any other CADit shape

This workflow is useful for:

  • Using existing models as templates
  • Modifying or remixing downloaded STL files
  • Creating variations of existing designs

Importing from local storage

CADit saves designs locally in your browser as a backup. Access these saved designs:

  1. Open the main menu
  2. Select Local Designs
  3. Browse your locally saved designs
  4. Select a design to open it

Local designs persist between browser sessions but are stored on your device. Use cloud save or download files if you need to access designs from other devices.

Tips for importing

  • Save before importing: Opening a CADit file or importing content replaces your current design
  • Check image contrast: High-contrast images with clear edges trace better
  • Use SVG when available: SVG files import more precisely than bitmap images
  • Start with smaller STL files: Large, complex STL models may take longer to process
