Learn how to import a reference image and trace it to create 3D shapes using the Photo Guide tool.

Tracing images

This guide walks you through importing a reference image and tracing it to create shapes in CADit. By the end, you will have a traced shape ready for 3D extrusion.

Prerequisites

  • A reference image file (PNG or JPG) on your computer
  • An image with clear, distinct regions works best for the automatic trace feature
  • For complex images, you may prefer manual tracing with drawing tools

Steps

Import the reference image

  1. Select the Photo Guide tool from the toolbar
  2. A file browser opens automatically
  3. Select your image file
  4. The image appears on the canvas, scaled to fit the workspace

Position and size the image

  1. Switch to the Transform tool
  2. Click the image to select it
  3. Drag to move the image to your desired position
  4. Use the corner handles to resize the image

The image maintains its aspect ratio when resized. Position it where you want your traced shapes to appear.

Trace regions automatically

Use the automatic trace feature for solid-colored regions:

  1. Select the Photo Guide tool
  2. Click and hold on a colored region you want to trace
  3. Drag outward to adjust the tolerance
  4. A red preview highlights the detected region
  5. Release to create a shape from the traced region

The tolerance determines how much color variation to include. Drag further from your starting point to include more variation, or stay close for a tighter selection.

If the entire image highlights in red, the tolerance is too high. Move the cursor closer to your starting point to reduce it.

Trace manually with drawing tools

For complex areas or fine detail, trace manually:

  1. Select a drawing tool (Freehand, Polygon, or a shape tool)
  2. Draw over the reference image, following its outlines
  3. Your shapes appear on top of the image
  4. Switch between tools as needed for different parts of the image

The reference image remains visible while you use other drawing tools.

Remove the reference image

After tracing, remove the reference image:

  1. Switch to the Transform tool
  2. Click the image to select it
  3. Press Delete or click the delete button

Your traced shapes remain on the canvas. The image was only a visual guide and is not part of your design.

Result

You now have shapes on the canvas that match your reference image. These shapes are ready for 3D extrusion and editing like any other CADit shapes.
